BCIS Presidential Election

I am pleased to announce that voting for the post of President of BCIS is now open. .
The personal statement of one of the 5 candidates, Professor Neal Uren, was not included on the election web page and accompanying e-mail. This was an administrative error, but it has become apparent that although all 5 candidates submitted their self-nominations before the closing date, Professor Uren’s supporting statement was not received until later.
The BCIS Administration Group, consisting of the President, Honorary Secretary, Treasurer, Audit Lead, and Clinical Standards Lead, has agreed that the election should be re-run and all previous votes will be discounted. All 5 candidates, Professor Nick Curzen, Dr Sen Devadathan, Professor David Hildick-Smith, Professor Philip MacCarthy, and Professor Neal Uren will be included and their supporting statements will be available on the website.
The election voting process will be relaunched on Monday April 29th. You will receive an e-mail with details of all candidates, including personal statements, and how to vote. Please note that none of the votes cast on Sunday 14th and Monday 15th April will be counted, so anyone who voted then will need to vote again and they are encouraged to do so.
Once again we sincerely apologise for the disruption this has caused, in particular to all of the candidates. We are grateful for their understanding.

I am delighted to announce that Gerald Clesham was successful in the recent election for BCIS Clinical Standards Group Lead and will officially take over from Adam de Belder from June 2019.

I am delighted to announce that Doug Fraser was successful in the recent election for BCIS Treasurer and will officially take over from David Hildick-Smith after ACI2019.

For the post of Training and Education Group Lead, I am delighted to announce that Raj Kharbanda was successful in the recent election and will officially take over from Mark Gunning after ACI2019.

Dear BCIS Members,

I am delighted to announce that Clare Appleby was successful in the recent election for Ordinary Council Member, and will be joining BCIS Council with immediate effect. There was an outstanding field of applicants, and pleasingly the turn-out was 70% higher than for the most recent previous election. Furthermore, the process of voting via the website appears to have run entirely smoothly.

Dear Members,

You are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society, to be held in the Blenheim Suite at the London Hilton Metropole Hotel at 18.30 on January 25th 2018.

An important agenda item at the AGM will be a vote on changes to the Articles of the Charity. This change is required because the current Rules of BCIS conflict with the Articles, which is in contradiction to Charities Law. Specifically, the Articles state that all new appointments to BCIS Council must be made at the AGM, whereas the Rules (as has been the practice) state that appointments are made through an election process conducted by a ballot done by mail, e-mail or otherwise not in person, and can occur at whatever time a position becomes available. This is essentially a legal/technical issue, but one that we are required to address. Please find a link to a word document which includes the AGM notice, together with details of the proposed amendment to the Articles, and details of how to appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf if you are unable to attend the AGM but wish to vote on the change to the Articles.

On behalf of BCIS Council I am pleased to announce that Dan McKenzie was successful in the recent election and has joined BCIS Council as Ordinary Council Member. This followed an incredibly competitive election process in which 11 extremely strong candidates were competing for a single position. I would also like to thank all of the other candidates who put themselves forward, as well as all those members who voted. I have no doubt Dan will make a major contribution to the Society, and am delighted to welcome him to the Council.

Call for abstracts for BCIS Young Investigator Competition to be held at RCP London 30/11/17

Dear Member

We are organising the YIA Competition differently this year.

The plan is to hold a Research Day at RCP London on 30/11/17 during which a panel made up of BCIS Research Group members will listen to shortlisted abstracts being presented, following which there will be up to 10 mins of questions.

The best 3 presentations will then be shortlisted for the formal YIA session at ACI in January, when they will compete for the overall title of Young Investigator of the Year, with prize presentations at the dinner at ACI.

All abstracts selected for presentation on 30/11 will be published in a Heart supplement.

We are therefore inviting submissions for the Research Day on 30/11/17.

Submissions should be made online to bcis@millbrookconferences.com using the below template.

Successful submissions will be notified approximately 1 week after the closing date of 23/10/17 at 1700hrs.

BCIS Study Days    

Call for Expressions of Interest

As we discussed at the recent ACI meeting, we believe that there is an increasing need for BCIS to provide a broader educational resource for BCIS members. In addition to Advanced Cardiovascular Intervention, the BCIS Allied Health Professionals meeting, and the two trainees courses, we aim to establish a series of BCIS study days, each to be held on a single day, and addressing a single specific topic. We would like to invite all UK centres to submit expressions of interest to host these proposed meetings.

Study days could be on any topic the centre wishes. It may be a specific lesion subset, such as left mainstem, bifurcations, or CTOs. It may be an interventional technology, such as laser, rotational atherectomy, bio-absorbable vascular scaffolds, intracoronary imaging or physiological lesion assessment. It may be a field of non-coronary intervention. Centres may already have an annual meeting they host which could be brought under a BCIS banner.

Initially we propose 3 study days annually, interspersed across the year, spread geographically, and rotating year-on-year. The first meeting will be late 2017 or early 2018. Host centres would be responsible for the topic, and would collaborate with BCIS on the details of content and faculty. The final educational content will be subject to BCIS approval and content will be archived for the BCIS website. Live or recorded cases may be included. The study days will be targeted at consultant education and registration for consultant BCIS members will be free. A total of 50-75 delegates is suggested.

Faculty should broadly include about half local speakers, and half external faculty, with a maximum of three international contributors. The final total (non-negotiable) budget is £25,000, and will be paid fully by BCIS. Additional supplementation of the budgets from industry is discouraged.

We would welcome all those interested in hosting a BCIS study day to send expressions of interest by e-mail, including an outline of the proposed meeting together with approximate costings, to any or all of the BCIS officers using the email addresses in the letterhead above, or to bcis@millbrookconferences.com. Detailed budgeting and organisational details will be requested for selected applications prior to final approval. Deadline for expressions of interest is 23.59hrs, 30 April 2017.

Dear BCIS Member

After their very successful tenure under the leadership of Rod Stables, several members of the R&D Group are now due to step down. I now, therefore, seek expressions of interest in joining the committee.  This will be a dynamic role that will actively contribute to our ambitious agenda and will suit individuals with a particular interest in research. It will involve up to 3 formal meetings per year as well as contribution to a range of tasks such as:  teaching courses; abstract marking; peer review; literature reviews; etc.

I would be grateful if interested individuals could email back bcis@millbrookconferences.com and include a short statement (maximum 300 words) to summarise their previous experience and any ambitions for the group.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rod and his team for their excellent work over the last 4 years.

I am delighted to announce to all BCIS members that Professor Nick Curzen has been elected as Research & Development Group Lead, and will take over from Rod Stables after the Advanced Cardiovascular Intervention conference in January 2017. Professor Curzen was elected unopposed. He has already brought a number of fresh ideas to the table, and I am sure you will join me in wishing him success in this crucial post for the Society.
