Our Purpose

ABOUT BCIS

The British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS) held its first meeting at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London in 1988 with the aim of establishing a regular meeting forum for those interested in interventional vascular procedures. (Prior to that the British Coronary Angioplasty Group (BCAG) formed by David Cumberland (Sheffield) had been holding meetings since the early 1980s. Facilitated case discussion was an important element of these meetings together with interaction with representatives from Industry and invited speakers. In 1987 David Cumberland as Chairman agreed that formal affiliation with the British Cardiac Society was appropriate and that the Group’s officers would in future be elected).

Purpose

The Society promotes education, training and research in cardiovascular intervention and develops and upholds clinical and professional standards.

Education and Training

BCIS provides a large array of educational material from a variety of sources, presentations, audiocasts and webcasts from previous conferences including both AHP and ACI. Clinical cases, publication reviews and news.

Every year we support trainees in interventional cardiology with basic and advanced courses, international fellowships and abstract and clinical case competitions.

Our AHP members now have an annual summer conference with a diverse programme over two days.

Audit

The Society continuously audits interventional activity in the UK each year and is central to maintaining high clinical standards with the national audit cycle together with publically available operator and institutional outcome data.

Site visits and peer review

As agreed with the DoH Heart Team, all hospitals wishing to start a new PCI programme are required to undergo a BCIS peer review visit. To initiate this process, a letter from the Trust Chief Executive should be addressed to Dr Clare Appleby, BCIS Honorary Secretary.

Site visits to existing PCI units can also be arranged if you wish to ensure that your unit is operating within the BCIS standards.

If you are setting up a new PCI service, please refer to the new site guidance.
