Dear BCIS Member,

As you will know by now, BCIS Council has agreed to enter into an agreement with Millbrook Medical Conferences to provide administrative services to BCIS, rather than using the current British Cardiovascular Society services. It is therefore our responsibility to formally advise you that Millbrook will serve as a data processor on behalf of BCIS.

Further information about the full GDPR policy that relates to this can be found here.

As a very important part of this reorganisation, and to allow us to avoid some BCIS members paying their subscriptions via the older BCS system, and some directly via the BCIS system, we will be writing, after 2/3/20, to those members who are paying their subs via the old BCS system (which will become redundant) to invite them to change to the newer BCIS subscription mechanism. We hope to make this as painless as possible!

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Azeem Ahmad, our affiliates coordinator at the BCS, for all his loyal and dedicated service to BCIS over the years.

Working practices of female interventional cardiologists

Dear Colleague

On behalf of the EAPCI Women’s Committee, we request BCIS members to kindly complete this survey.

Previous surveys suggest that both women and men consider that the burden of workload and the overall risk linked to radiation exposure hamper women from a career in interventional cardiology. Frequently, the “risk of a pregnancy” associated to young female cardiologists discourage catheterisation laboratories directors to choose them for a fellowship and above all for a permanent position. Moreover laws about radiation exposure, and maximum allowed doses could vary from one country to another. Likewise, regulations for professionally exposed workers also vary between countries.

The following are the aims of this survey:

1. To determine gender ratio of medical/paramedical personals working in catheterisation laboratories.

2. To evaluate the proportion of coronary/peripheral/structural and EP procedures performed in European catheterisation laboratories.

3. To evaluate radiation exposure, protection, means of measurement and educational program proposed and/or required as well as the level of awareness about radiation protection.

4. To determine the real-life practice for pregnant catheter lab staff.

It is now 28 years since BCIS was first formed in 1988. Most of our original members have now retired from NHS practice and may no longer feel the need to attend the full Advanced Cardiovascular Intervention meeting. However to allow retired members to maintain social contact with their retired colleagues – and with colleagues still in practice – BCIS is supporting a new category of Extraordinary BCIS Membership.

This is open to former BCIS members who have fully retired from NHS clinical practice.

There is no annual fee for this Extraordinary Membership and they are very welcome to attend the Conference Dinner at the Hilton Metropole on 18 January 2017, where there will be a special Emeritus table where they can dine with their friends and former colleagues. A dinner ticket will currently cost £55 (this increases to £65 from 4 January 2017). Please note entry to the ACI meeting is not included.

Call For Expressions of Interest: VALVE FOR LIFE UK LEAD

Lead of the UK Valve for Life Programme

We would like to seek expressions of interest from members of the BCIS Structural Intervention Group and Valve for Life Committee in taking over the role of Lead of the UK Valve for Life programme. The successful candidate will work alongside the previous lead Dan Blackman, in his new capacity as Chair of the BCIS Structural Group, but will have sole leadership of this important initiative, supported by the Valve for Life Committee.

Valve for Life is a European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Intervention (EAPCI) programme. The UK was nominated to be the 4th national Valve for Life initiative in early 2020, and has successfully delivered a comprehensive programme of activities aimed at increasing awareness and delivery of transcatheter valve therapies in the UK. Confirmation of ongoing funding to support the UK programme into the 2023/24 financial year has recently been received from EAPCI, and work to plan future activities has begun. The ongoing success of the UK programme will be dependent on the energy and enthusiasm of the new Lead.

If more than one expression of interest is received, the successful candidate will be selected by a nominated group of BCIS Council members, including the President and Structural Group lead.
