iCorMicA builds on the BHF-funded CorMicA pilot trial (PMID: 30266608). iCorMicA is a randomised, controlled, blinded, international, clinical trial of stratified medicine vs. angiography -guided management in patients with known or suspected angina and no obstructive coronary arteries. This is an academic, industry-funded trial that is co-sponsored by the NHS and the University of Glasgow. iCorMicA has NIHR Portfolio adoption and is eligible for NIHR Clinical Research Network support in England.

Dear colleague,

We would like help understanding how we the cardiovascular community are currently managing in-patients on oral anticoagulants undergoing non-emergent PCI & how this may reflect (or not) published guidelines.

The questionnaire is endorsed by BCIS & takes little time to complete (~ 4 minutes). It is intended for consultant interventional cardiologists in the UK.

While guidelines on the management of such patients have been published, the recommendations are not consistent, hence our need to know what everyone is actually doing.

The responses will formulate our understanding of what is happening in everyday practice, & to what degree this is at variance with guideline management. The results will be fed back to participants.

Allied Health Professional Group Committee Member (3 posts)

We are looking for dedicated, enthusiastic and experienced allied health professionals to join the Group and play a key role in its various activities including: organisation of the BCIS AHP Summer Meeting; ACI – AHP sessions. You can find out more details about the Allied Health Professionals Group on the BCIS website where there is a dedicated AHP area.

Person Specification

  • Qualifications: Relevant professional qualification for discipline.
  • Experience: Relevant experience in interventional cardiology practice. As a guide, indicative experience of eight years post qualification with at least five years working within interventional cardiology desirable. Minimum of two years at senior level.
  • Other: an interest in teaching and education is essential with an expected commitment to take part in sessions during the AHP Summer meeting and ACI. Experience of delivering talks / leading teaching sessions is desirable.

We are looking for enthusiastic members who have novel ideas to develop the goals of the AHP group and BCIS for the future.

Application is by self-nomination, with reference to the person specification above. A supporting statement from the candidate, no more than 1 side of A4, which specifically addresses their suitability for the role must accompany self-nomination in order for the application to be valid.

We would like to invite expressions of interest from enthusiastic and committed BCIS members for the new role of Deputy BCIS Audit Lead.

Summary

The successful applicant will shadow and work with Professor Peter Ludman for an initial period of 2 years.  During this period of time, the successful applicant will assist Peter in running the audit activity of the Society, with the intention of learning the role.

Given the commitment that such a role requires, it is the intention of the Society to always have a Deputy Audit Lead in place, so that there are 2 members to share the work and responsibility in the future.

Update regarding BCIS international fellowships.

Due to the circumstances around COVID-19, the 2020 BCIS international fellowships commenced later than anticipated.

Given the ongoing uncertainty with COVID, BCIS has made the difficult decision to postpone 2021 fellowships round, with the aim to advertise in Spring 2022 for fellowships to start in 2023.

We appreciate that this is very disruptive to trainees wishing to apply. We will keep to updated about any progress.

Let’s answer that question together

Dear BCIS Member,

There is much debate that we may be seeing substantially fewer patients presenting with myocardial infarction across the UK since the COVID pandemic struck, and a commensurate concern that this may be because patients are too nervous to seek the help they need.   Without national audit data, however, these observations remain speculative.  It is our intention, with your help, to look at this question using the BCIS-NICOR database to which we all contribute. We have assurances that the logistical barriers that have prevented rapid data access and analysis in the past can be circumvented, and that we, therefore, will be able to both provide outputs and disseminate the findings very rapidly.

We stress that the purpose is NOT to assess the performance of you or your teams, but to provide important and timely national data in a dynamic situation, to assess patient events and access in response to the pandemic.

In the first instance, we propose to simply compare the month by month rate of STEMI/NSTEMI PCI for the first 3 months of this year compared to the same time period last year.

We can only do this if you are able to upload your data promptly to NICOR. We, therefore, need the help of members, particularly those who take responsibility in their centres for the data upload: 

If at all possible we are asking that you upload all your PCI data (even if it as yet un-validated) to the end of March 2020 by the end of April.

We will take a data extract at the end of April and should be able to provide some simple analyses within about a week.  We acknowledge that later uploads might contain modified data, once there is time for full validation, and again stress that the purpose is NOT about assessing the performance of you or your teams.

Many thanks for your ongoing engagement with the national audit processes in these challenging times… we hope you agree that this is an important piece of work that we can all achieve together.
