Expressions of interest are invited for the position of Non-surgical centres representative on the BCIS Structural Intervention Group. This position, which is for a 3-year term, will be available from January 31st 2025, when the current post-holder Jo Shannon reaches the end of her term.

This is a crucial post in the Society, representing the interests and perspectives of non-surgical centres in the rapidly evolving field of structural intervention, as well as contributing to the overall work of the group.

Application is by self-nomination. A supporting statement from the candidate, no more than 500 words, which specifically addresses their suitability for the role must accompany self-nomination for the application to be valid. The successful candidate will be selected by an appointment committee led by Structural Heart Group Chair Professor Dan Blackman.

Dear BCIS Member,

On behalf of BCIS council, I would like to invite applications for the position of BCIS Treasurer. This is a key role with responsibility for all the financial activities of the society. The post-holder will work closely with the President and Honorary Secretary and will be an ex-Officio member of all the BCIS subgroups. As one of the three officers of BCIS, the successful applicant will be integral to the workings and major decisions that are taken on behalf of the Society.

The position becomes vacant from January 2025 when the current incumbent Dr Dan McKenzie completes his term. There will be a short run-in period to allow the successful candidate to familiarise themselves with the role.

Any current or previous BCIS council member is eligible to apply and there will be an election if there are two or more applicants. A job description is attached below with more details of the responsibilities of the post. Applications should include a brief supporting statement indicating relevant experience and potential ideas. The closing date for applications is Monday 30th September 2024 at 5pm.

This years competition for the place was fierce and we would like to thank all applicants for taking part in the competitive process. Our thanks to SCAI for providing the place to BCIS. Tribute to Charles Ilsley

It is with the greatest of sadness to announce that on Saturday 13th July 2024 Dr Charles Ilsley passed away at his home aged 74.

Charles was a cornerstone of the field of Interventional Cardiology being one of only 35 cardiologists when he chose that speciality in 1975 (or perhaps more accurately it chose him). He first went to Harefield Hospital as a cardiology registrar in 1977 and in 1979 specialised in Paediatric cardiology, before switching to adults and joining Tony Rickards at the National Heart Hospital in London where they performed the 1st Balloon Angioplasty in any London hospital. Charles left to New Zealand in 1983 to take up a consultant post at Dunedin Hospital. Whilst “down under” he happened to attend a course in Melbourne where Andreas Gruentzig was teaching. This was a transformative experience and Charles swiftly led Dunedin to be the top centre in New Zealand initiating a 24/7 primary angioplasty service to treat STEMI patients. Charles returned to Harefield as consultant in 1987 and throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s led the rapid expansion of Harefield to be the centre it is today. When you asked him what made him most proud in his career, it was the development of a 24/7 heart attack service and teaching several generations of cardiologists. Throughout his career, Charles was a Loyal BCIS member and attended numerous medical conferences over the years. He was a fantastic teacher and mentor because he had the experience, confidence and unparalleled skills to allow his fellows to make mistakes, talk them through fixing them – knowing that he could pull any situation back from the brink if he had to. Fixing patients was what he loved to do and there are countless families that have benefited from his expertise.

Charles lived life to the full, enjoying all sports from Rugby to Skiing and became an enthusiastic scuba diver over the past 25 years.

One of the many charities he supported was the RNLI and the Salcombe Field of Light was his chosen charity. It is to commemorate their 200 year anniversary and help fund the live saving work of the RNLI. You can view the website and donate here. BCIS INTERVENTIONAL TRAINEES COURSE 2024: BEST TRAINEE CASE COMPETITION

We are delighted to encourage trainees to submit their most instructive clinical PCI case for an opportunity to present at the BCIS Interventional Trainees Course.

A shortlist of the three best cases will be presented during the meeting and will be subject to open discussion and critique. An award will be given to the best case.

A formal scoring system will be used based on:

• Educational value
• Complexity of case
• Quality of presentation and interaction with the audience and panel.

Technical guidelines for submitting a clinical case:

• Only .ppt, .pptx, .pps, .ppsx formats are accepted.
• Your presentation must not exceed 10 slides and should include a concise summary of the case.
• A final summary slide of the dominant learning points will be used to assess the educational value.
• It is expected that the trainee will have been significantly involved in the case.
• A cover note (email) from the copying consultant responsible for the case is required to authorise a submission.
• One case per applicant only.

Dear all,

The BCIS educational forum has now been successfully running for over three years and has been a great success with high numbers attending the live stream and watching on-demand after the session. The sessions address the JRCPTB higher specialist interventional cardiology curriculum.

We are now looking for expression of interest for more trainee speakers (January 2025 – June 2025) to continue delivering high-quality sessions for all BCIS members to enjoy. The sessions last for 1 hour in total and start at 19:00 on the second Tuesday of the month.

Please submit your expression of interest by means of email BCIS@millbrookconferences.co.uk including your training grade and hospital by Friday 23 August.

NICOR Publishes 2024 Annual Report with New Interactive Reporting

NICOR recently published its National Cardiac Audit Programme (NCAP) 2024 Annual Report supported with eight interactive sub-specialty clinical reports, and a dedicated Annual Report for Patients, Carers and the Public. The reports cover the 12 months from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023.

This year’s report explores potentially important post-pandemic shifts in the demand for cardiovascular services, how these are provided, and the variability experienced in different locations. Levels of activity for most cardiovascular sub-specialties have continued to improve and are higher than the levels seen in 2020/21 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some areas remain below pre-COVID levels, most notably adult and paediatric cardiac surgery.

In addition to the annual report, NICOR presented for the first time, its new interactive reports for the eight sub-specialties covered by the audit programme. They are produced with more detailed domain-level analyses and commentary. This allows clinicians, patients and members of the public, commissioners, and others to focus on the information that is of most interest to them (for example drilling down to explore the performance of different parts of the country and individual hospitals). These reports can be found on the NICOR website.

Understanding the continued pressures on hospitals and their clinical teams, NICOR has thanked all colleagues and stakeholders for their continued support and contribution.

Exciting opportunity for senior PCI trainees and fellows:

The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) has invited BCIS to send one interventional cardiology fellow to participate in the 2024 SCAI Fellows Course.

The SCAI Fellows Courses is the specialty’s premier fellows-only course and is designed to provide an engaging environment in which attendees can interact with internationally recognised faculty. The curriculum offers participants a comprehensive education in core curricula, fundamental techniques and tools, and representative cases that will be essential to their future as a practicing interventionalist.

This year’s courses will be held Wednesday 11 – Sunday 15 December at the Hyatt Regency, Miami FL. SCAI will offer free registration and reimburse housing for five nights (11-15 December). Whatsmore, BCIS is offering to provide economy-class flights to and from Miami.

Interventional Cardiology Fellow Qualification: Nominated Fellow is currently in an accredited interventional cardiology fellowship program in the UK and has not previously attended the SCAI Fellows Course.

  • A short (no more than one side A4) supporting statement regarding your commitment to interventional training and how you will use this opportunity for personal development and shared learning

The deadline for applications is Tuesday 6 August at 5 PM. The applications will be reviewed by members of the Training and Education Group and the successful candidate will be informed by Tuesday 20 August 2024.

Attendees must attend the full meeting in order to receive reimbursement for the hotel costs after the meeting concludes. The successful candidate will be required to write a full report of the course and share photographs of the course for submission on the BCIS website.
