BCIS Research Day

BCIS Research Day

14th December  |  Royal College of Physicians, London

“Reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease through interventional cardiology research”

Despite significant progress over the past few decades with advancement in potent pharmacotherapies and technologies, cardiovascular disease in particular ischaemic heart disease remains number one killer in the UK and worldwide. Research saves lives. Institutions that undertake research have better outcomes for patients. Randomised clinical trials provide much needed evidence to inform clinical practice guidelines and impact clinical practice. In the UK we lead and participate in many practice changing clinical trials, registries and big data related studies.

BCIS Research Day show cases the world class research led by our BCIS members.

  • BCIS R&D group comprises of 3 research groups: Acute Coronary Syndrome working group, Chronic Coronary Syndrome working group and Structural working group. Each of the working group leads will present on activities within their working groups with an opportunity to hear how BCIS members can be involved.
  • We will hear from the lead investigators of major UK led studies and also registry leads.
  • We also want to recognise our future leaders by showcasing our BCIS young colleagues’ research submitted for the prestigious BCIS Young Investigator Award.
  • We will also hear from our major funders on the various research grant awards that BCIS members could apply to lead on the next big clinical trial in interventional cardiology.
  • We will also hear from established clinical trial leaders with keynote lecture from Professor C Michael Gibson from Harvard University, Boston USA.
  • There will also be opportunity to hear on what it takes to be an investigator and what it takes to publish in major medical journals.

The BCIS Research Day will be value to everyone involved in patient care and research including consultants, nurses, research nurses, other allied health professionals, trainees and academics.

Be sure to join us and see you there!

Professor Vijay Kunadian

BCIS R&D Lead

BCIS OHCA Study Day

BCIS OHCA Study Day

25 September 2023 | Royal College of Physicians | In-Person

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a significant problem for the NHS. In England in 2019, ambulance services responded to over 80,000 cardiac arrest calls, of which 31,146 subsequently received treatment. Fewer than a third (30.7%) of patients in whom resuscitation was attempted by ambulance staff were admitted to hospital with a return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Overall survival to discharge was 9.6%.

The aims of this OHCA Study day are:

  • To promote the BCIS position statements on OHCA, namely, to try to eliminate variance across the UK in the provision of diagnostics, therapeutics and rehab of OHCA patients
  • To bring local policy makers/decision makers (‘Network leads’) together to share best practice and key evidence in the contemporary management of OHCA patients
  • To offer a learning experience to BCIS members through case-based discussion to integrate into their own practice
  • To share knowledge and evidence of local and regional pathways and initiatives (BCIS triage pathway, CARE clinic)

The program will consist of:

  • Short lectures
  • ‘Case in a box’ presentations with a provocative clinical scenario, clinical situation slides, echo/angio/CT images, case follow-up/what happened/what drove particular decisions
  • Discussion
  • Trainees’ best case/best abstract

Join this webinar if you want a contemporary overview of the field of percutaneous mitral and tricuspid repair, or need guidance on clinical and imaging selection of patients who are suitable for treatment. The webinar is aimed at all clinicians involved in the management of patients with mitral and tricuspid regurgitation. The webinar will be led by Dr Jonathan Byrne and will use a case-based approach to discuss how and where patients should be referred.
