BCIS OHCA Study Day

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a significant problem for the NHS. In England in 2019, ambulance services responded to over 80,000 cardiac arrest calls, of which 31,146 subsequently received treatment. Fewer than a third (30.7%) of patients in whom resuscitation was attempted by ambulance staff were admitted to hospital with a return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Overall survival to discharge was 9.6%.

The aims of this OHCA Study day are:

  • To promote the BCIS position statements on OHCA, namely, to try to eliminate variance across the UK in the provision of diagnostics, therapeutics and rehab of OHCA patients
  • To bring local policy makers/decision makers (‘Network leads’) together to share best practice and key evidence in the contemporary management of OHCA patients
  • To offer a learning experience to BCIS members through case-based discussion to integrate into their own practice
  • To share knowledge and evidence of local and regional pathways and initiatives (BCIS triage pathway, CARE clinic)

 

The program will consist of:

  • Short lectures
  • ‘Case in a box’ presentations with a provocative clinical scenario, clinical situation slides, echo/angio/CT images, case follow-up/what happened/what drove particular decisions
  • Discussion
  • Trainees’ best case/best abstract
