Royal Jubilee Hospital, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada – Position commencing August 2026 – August 2027
Current Incumbent: Dr Simon Romaine from Northampton General Hospital (January 2025 – January 2026)
Here’s what previous fellow, Dr Sharmaine Thirunavukiarasu says about their previous experience “ My experience in Vancouver Island has completely exceeded expectations and given the opportunity, I would do it all over again. This fellowship has enabled me to broaden my clinical, procedural and academic horizons having worked in a high-volume centre at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. I have been able to fully hone my skills in complex coronary interventional procedures (LMS, bifurcations, rotablation, laser atherectomy, CTO) and high-volume use of intravascular imaging/coronary physiology. The training in Canada has provided me with invaluable experience having worked in a different healthcare system which will enrich my perspective and adaptability to various clinical settings when I return to the UK for my consultant post. I have had the opportunity to form lifelong networks with renowned interventional cardiologists in Canada. The fellowship programme in Victoria prioritises procedural independence and having done my fellowship in Canada, I now have the confidence to handle complex cases independently. I have been trained to develop a holistic approach to understanding of patient care beyond the cath lab, focussing on the continuum of care from diagnosis to intervention and follow up. Finally, I have been fortunate to travel around Canada and embrace the natural beauty of its national parks, coastal shores and cultural diversity”
Flinders Medical Centre Adelaide, Australia – Position commencing August 2026 – August 2027
Previous Incumbent: Dr Arka Das from Leeds General Infirmary (May 2024 – May 2025)
Current Incumbent: Dr Tom Kite from Nottingham City Hospital (May 2025 – May 2026)
In addition to the salary shown above there are some additional financial supplements to support with relocation costs as well and assisting with private clinical aspects.
Here’s what Dr Arka Das thinks about his time in Australia;
“The BCIS International Fellowship programme at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, is a fantastic opportunity to enhance practical skills in complex coronary angioplasty and an array of structural procedures. The friendly team welcomed me into their family and enabled me to develop independence and autonomy in the cath lab through my 12 months. Service provision requirements were very light, allowing me to focus primarily on performing procedures. As one of two fellows on-site, I was able to select and prioritise which cases to focus on, and equally have flexibility on when to take leave for travel, making it the perfect balance.
The elected fellow can expect to perform over 450 primary operator PCIs, with frequent use of intra-coronary imaging and physiology. The site is a referral centre for complex left main, bifurcation, calcium modification and CTO procedures. Rotablation Atherectomy and Intravascular Lithotripsy are available and frequently used when indicated. The consultants were flexible and when possible, booked such cases around my availability, allowing me to maximise learning opportunities.
The team also runs a vibrant structural service, with high volumes of routine and complex TAVIs, alongside PFO, ASD, VSD closures, percutaneous occlusion of left atrial appendages and mitral valvuloplasty. They do just about anything! And hands-on fellow participation is warmly encouraged, making this is one of the true highlights of the fellowship programme.
The hospital has strong affiliations with Flinders University, so there is ample opportunities for involvement in research and teaching programmes. There is local funding available for attending conferences around Australia, an excellent way to visit the different cities. Adelaide itself is also a very friendly and safe city; I came with my wife and 2 young kids and made the most of the beach lifestyle here”
