No one should have to tolerate sexual harassment in the workplace. The British Cardiovascular Intervention Society takes seriously its role in promoting a safe and secure environment for doctors, nurses, radiographers and physiologists, all of whom work together in the catheter lab and constitute the membership of BCIS. Within the catheter lab setting there can be a power imbalance with more junior female members of the team in particular being potentially susceptible to unwanted comments or attention. The majority of professionals treat each other with consideration and respect, but there is a minority who do not – occurrence of serious sexual misconduct has been highlighted in the recently publicised survey of surgical practice. Behaviour of a sexually inappropriate nature has no place in the hospital environment. There are no excuses for sexual harassment at work.
