Conference overview

St George’s University Hospitals is delighted to co-host the 2024 edition of the BCIS Interventional Trainees Course.

This is a recognised BCIS Course for Core and Advanced Trainees, and as such is considered by BCIS a core component of sub-specialty training in intervention.

Topics

The meeting will consist of case-based lectures and discussions concentrating on mainstream coronary and structural intervention. Topics include:

  • The Golden rules of PCI
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)
  • Stent failure and design
  • Complications sessions
  • PCI complexity

Hands-on demonstrations

Plus, educational hands-on demonstrations, split into but not limited to the following sessions:

  • Femoral access and closure
  • Microcatheters and wires
  • Rotablation and orbital atherectomy
  • IVUS and OCT imaging
  • PCI simulation

Hands-on demonstrations will run parallel. Delegates are to choose one stream ‘CORE’ or ‘ADVANCED’ according to their level of training, which is to be verified by superiors / supervisors.

The British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS) and the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR) will collaborate in an hour-long webinar to provide an update on the UK TAVI registry. Join the proceedings live from 17:00 on Monday 2 September.

About NICOR
NICOR’s expertise and passion is helping the NHS, the government and regulatory bodies to monitor and improve the quality of care by checking that the care received by cardiovascular patients meets good practice standards. NICOR aims to enhance the care of patients by efficiently reviewing medical practice against clear and exact criteria and modifying it where necessary.

NICOR collects data and produces analysis to enable hospitals and healthcare improvement bodies to monitor and improve the quality of care and outcomes of cardiovascular patients. NICOR currently manages ten national clinical audits and health technology registries.

The meeting is aimed at UK cardiology trainees undertaking training in coronary/structural intervention (ST5 and above)

The BCIS Cardiac Physiology Catheter Lab Course, aimed at cardiac physiologists, will take place on Thursday 24 – Friday 25 October 2024 at Bristol Delta City Centre.

Course Overview

The aim of the BCIS Cardiac Physiology Catheter Lab Course is to equip cardiac physiologists working in the cardiac catheter lab with the knowledge and practical skills to safely undertake interventional procedures independently.

This two day course will cover the theory of interventions and procedures in the cardiac catheter lab, with a period of supervised practical assessments taken place in the applications workplace.

This is delivered in partnership with the British Cardiovascular interventional Society, and the candidates base hospital and it is expected that the entire course can be completed within two years of starting.

The AHP Working Group and BCIS have developed this course specifically for YOU.

Who is this conference aimed at? The conference is aimed at cardiac physiologists.

 

Accreditation

Accreditation is run for members of BCIS and is not a compulsory or regulatory certificate of competence or excellence.

The accreditation process comprises two parts:

STEP 1
Theoretical study, attendance at the BCIS Cardiac Physiology Catheter Lab two day Course

STEP 2
Completion of a practical logbook assessment submission with a narrated presentation case study from the logbook.

More Information…

The catheter lab skills can only be maintained by continued education and practical involvement in the labs.

The candidate must have a designated mentor who is an experienced catheter lab cardiac physiologist to assist them through the accreditation process.

The logbook should be collected over a period of 18 months and can be submitted sooner if complete. The 18 months starts at the point of attending the 2 study days.

This Logbook is to record the reflection of both the candidate and assessor ensuring that there is positive and constructive feedback and guidance on improving practice.

Patient identifiable data should not be recorded in the logbook.

Final sign off for the logbook is undertaken by the departmental lead for cardiac catheter labs.

This new BCIS course has been initiated by the BCIS AHP Working Group.
